The Florida Panthers have acquired embattled forward Mike Hoffman and a 2018 seventh round pick from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Florida’s 2019 second round pick, 2018 fourth round pick (via Vegas) and 2018 5th round pick.
“Mike is a skilled, consistent and hard-working player who has proven himself to be a talented goal scorer in the NHL,” said general manager Dale Tallon. “His speed, experience and offensive abilities will bolster our top-six group.”
In 2017-18, the 28-year-old Hoffman appeared in all 82 of the Ottawa Senators regular season games, producing 56 points on 22 goals and 34 assists. The 6-foot, 181-pound native of Kitchener, ON, has produced 20-plus goals in each of his last four seasons, including a career-high 29 goals in 2015-16.
Over 342 career regular season NHL games with Ottawa (2011-12 to 2017-18), Hoffman has amassed 230 points (107G/123A) and has notched 14 points (7G/7A) over 25 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Hoffman was originally selected by the Senators in the fifth round (130th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft.
Ottawa just dealt Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks nearly a week after allegations surfaced that his fianceé Monika Caryk harassed Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson’s wife via social media. A charge Hoffman and Caryk have denied.
The Sharks quickly flipped the forward to the Panthers, who upgraded its top-six without losing a player.
