NHL Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Saturday Open Forum

The Florida Panthers completed the second day of development camp yesterday. Cats prospects will be back out on the ice this morning with Red Squad going at 8:40 followed by the Blue Squad at 10:40.

The two sides will scrimmage tomorrow at 9 a.m. That should be interesting. If my schedule allows I will make the drive up to Coral Springs to get some eyes on it.

While the free agent rumor mill has quieted down quite a bit over the last couple of days there were some happenings yesterday that affect or could affect the Panthers going forward.

Division rival Toronto re-signed RFA forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson to very team-friendly deals which should make it a little easier for the Maple Leafs to sign Mitch Marner. It should also make things easier if the team needs to trade one or both of them in the future. (Pension Plan Puppets)

The Colorado Avalanche acquired talented underachiever Andre Burakovsky from the Washington Capitals for a second and third round pick in the 2020 Entry Draft and AHLer Scott Kosmachuk. Does this acquisition give the Avalanche enough at forward? Or will the team still be competing with the Cats for dynamic winger Artemi Panarin? Colorado still has plenty of cap space, so they could still be shopping for Bread. (Mile High Hockey)

Circling back to the Atlantic Division, the cash-strapped Vegas Golden Knights traded defenseman Colin Miller east to the Buffalo Sabres. The Golden Knights got back a second-round pick in the 2021 draft and a 2022 fifth-round selection. Miller has three years to go on his contract which carries an AAV of $3.875 million. As I mentioned above, there is not a lot out there rumor-wise, but stop by Sportsnet for the latest chatter, including a possible move by goaltender Cam Talbot to Calgary.
