Panthers at the Worlds: Barkov powers Finns to 5-0 win over Slovaks

Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov scored his third goal of the tournament and added two assists in Finland’s 5-0 rout over Slovakia in Group B action from the IIHF World Championship on Sunday.

Barkov scored 6:46 into the thrid period to put the Finns up 3-0 before having a hand in his team’s final two goals scored by Jussi Jokinen and Patrik Laine.

Jokinen’s goal was his first of the tournament and came with Finland on a late power play. He finished the game with three shots on goal and +1 rating in 15:27 TOI.

Barkov logged of 14:29 ice time and registered two shots on goal and a +2 rating.

The 20-year-old is now tied for third in tournament scoring with 9 points. Jokinen has 8 points in six games.

Finland leads Group B with a 6-0 record and will face Canada on Tuesday to close out opening round play. Mike Matheson and the Canadians will go today against France, looking to match the Finns undefeated start.

In other games not involving Panther players, Germany upset the U.S. 3-2, Denmark stunned the Czech Republic 2-1 in a shootout, and Sweden edged Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout.
