Rob Schremp leads Portland to 3-2 win over Providence

Veteran Rob Schremp scored two goals, including the winner in overtime, to lead the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 win over the visiting Providence Bruins on Saturday night at Cross Insurance Arena.

Rob Flick opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period at the 6:45 mark from Wade Megan and Tony Turgeon. Turgeon is currently up from ECHL Manchester on a PTO.

The P-Bruins evened the game at 4:51 of the second period on an Austin Czarnik tally. Brandon DeFazio drew the only helper on the play.

Schremp bagged his tenth of the season later in the frame to put the Pirates back on top. MacKenzie Weegar and Kyle Rau collected the assists on the power-play goal.

Czarnik struck again with 7:05 left in the final frame, this time from Ben Youds and Alexander Khokhlachev, to even things up for a second time.

Weegar and goaltender Mike McKenna combined to set up Schremp for the deciding goal at 4:59 of the extra session to give Portland the win.

The 29-year-old Schremp leads the Pirates with 21 points in 23 games.

McKenna finished the game with 23 saves, while loser Malcolm Subban stopped 29 of 32 shots for Providence.

Portland (11-11-1) finishes up its four-game homestand on Wednesday when the Springfield Falcons come to town.
