The San Antonio Rampage went 1-1 over the weekend to remain just outside of the top eight in the AHL’s Western Conference. The Rampage skated to a 4-3 shootout win on the road against the Texas Stars on Friday to briefly climb above the .500 mark, but fell at home by a 4-2 margin to the Toronto Marlies on Sunday afternoon.
- In Friday’s game, San Antonio fell behind 2-0, with the Texas goals courtesy of Maxime Fortunus and Colton Sceviour, before rallying to take the lead. Eric Selleck scored his second of the season at 14:14 of the second period to get the Rampage on the board. Alex Petrovic and Quinton Howden collected the assists on the goal. Garrett Wilson notched his fifth of the campaign to even the game at 2:05 of the third period. Jonathan Racine and Howden combined to set up the goal. New member of the Panther Family, Dylan Olsen put the Rampage ahead at 7:36 with the helpers going to John Lee and Jared Gomes. Brendan Ranford would beat Jacob Markstrom later in the period to force overtime. In the shootout, Drew Shore scored to offset an earlier Sceviour goal, setting the stage for Jed Ortmeyer’s game-winner in the seventh round. Markstrom finished with 43 saves and tuned aside six of seven Texas attempts in the shootout. Stars’ keeper Allen York was tagged with the loss.
- On Sunday, San Antonio grabbed an early lead, but couldn’t keep up with the Marlies, who scored twice in the third period to capture the win. Colby Robak scored at the 3:50 mark of the first period to open the scoring. Drew Shore picked up the only assist on the goal. Toronto got second period goals from Spencer Abbott and Troy Bodie to take a 2-1 lead. Greg Rallo evened things up with 18 seconds remaining in the frame on a nice deflection. Denny Urban and Ryan Whitney combined to set up the power-play goal. Former Panther T.J. Brennan beat Markstrom to give Toronto back the lead at 16:05 of the third period. The goal was Brennan’s 11th of the season and came with the Marlies on a power play thanks to a Jed Ortmeyer interference penalty. Jerry D’Amigo would tally into an empty-net to complete the scoring with 10 seconds left in the game. Markstrom made 24 saves and took the loss, while Toronto’s Christopher Gibson made 34 saves to secure the win. The defeat ended a five-game winning streak on home ice for the Rampage.
San Antonio is now 9-9-0-1 and will play a home-and-home this weekend against the Oklahoma City Barons.
