Rochester Americans release GM Jody Gage

In a not-entirely surprising move considering recent results, the AHL Americans - and by extension, the Florida Panthers - have relieved longtime Amerk Jody Gage from his responsibilities with the club.

For nearly a quarter century, Gage has been involved in Rochester hockey, beginning in 1985 as a player, and ending his run as general manager of an organization currently in flux, and not entirely of his doing.

He remains a legend in the area after 24 years of service in various capacities with the organization.

Gage holds every meaningful franchise scoring record and is a charter member of the American Hockey League Hall of Fame. In 653 regular-season games as an Amerk, he scored 351 goals, 377 assists and 728 points.

Some may blame the apparent scapegoating of such a veteran presence as a conspiratorial plot by Panthers management and new Americans' owner Curt Styres, but a full housecleaning was probably in order anyway considering the now-former GM was given players he didn't choose, a budget he didn't set, and a coaching staff he didn't hire. All of which, for better or worse to Rochester fans, allows the Panthers stricter control of the AHL operation.
