Panthers Development Camp: Team McCabe defeats Team Skrudland 5-3 on final day

On the final day of 2012’s Panthers Development Camp, Bryan McCabe‘s “white jerseys” faced off against Brian Skrudland’s helmed the “red” squad. Nick Bjugstad was matched with Jonathan Huberdeau and Jonathan Hazen, comprising Skrudland’s top line as McCabe countered Skrewy’s openers with defensemen Alex Petrovic and recent first-round selection Michael Matheson. The first twenty would be a goalie battle between Sam Brittain and tryout Michael Houser keeping the game scoreless.

The first goal went to Team McCabe courtesy of forward Anthony Luciani. Team Skrudland’s Red would tie the score soon after on a goal from Alexander Delnov, but Francis Beauvillier gave the McCabe team another lead with tap-in goal off a Zach Hyman shot (he finished with two assists). After the end of the second period, the players got to show off their shootout moves, with Huberdeau pulling his standard shock-and-awe procedure.

The final period began with both teams changing out goalies, with Andrew Volkening coming in for Sam Brittain on Team McCabe and Andrey Makarov replacing Houser. Josh Birkholz gave the Cabers a 3-1 lead, but Skrudland was able to quickly answer with back-to-back goals from Wade Megan and Steven Hodges to tie the game. Luciani was awarded a penalty shot after being high-sticked by Bjugstad, but was stopped by Makarov. John Lee answered back with a beautiful sniper shot leaving Team Skrudland with no choice but to pull Makarov; Kyle Rau nailed an empty net to seal the victory.

Notes:

  • Forward John McFarland was injured and did not participate in Friday’s scrimmage
  • Minnesota-Duluth’s Joe Basaraba had a slick give-and-go goal in the third period for the White squad
