The 18-year-old Cowan had 20 goals and 53 points in 68 games with the London Knights of the OHL last season. He added 21 points in 20 playoff games as London advanced to the league final before being eliminated by the Peterborough Petes.
The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Caleb Jones to a one-year contract worth the league minimum of $775,000. Jones, 26, had four goals and 16 points in 73 games for the Chicago Blackhawks last season. He registered 86 shots on goal, accumulated 40 penalty minutes and finished the year with a minus-19 rating.
