Wednesday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Offseason Open Forum

The Florida Panthers have signed forward Brandon Pirri to a professional tryout.

Pirri produced 18 points (8G/10A) in 60 games season with the New York Rangers during the 2016-17 season. The 6-foot, 186-pound native of Toronto, Ontario, played in 122 games with Florida from 2014-16 and totaled 62 points (40G/22A), including a career-best 22 goals during the 2014-15 campaign, before he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks.

Pirri, originally selected by Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (59th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, has played in 226 NHL games with the Rangers (2016-17), Anaheim (2016), Florida (2014-16) and Chicago (2010-14), recording 98 points (57G/41A).

Speaking of PTOs, Eric Gelinas will spend training camp with the Montreal Canadiens on a professional tryout basis. The 26-year-old defenseman split time last season between the Colorado Avalanche and their AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage.

Defenseman Jared Cowen will join the Avalanche for training camp on a professional tryout as he looks to make his return to the NHL. The 26-year-old Cowen last played on February 26, 2016 before he was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the return for Dion Phaneuf.

Former Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan has decided to hang up his skates after 21 NHL seasons. Doan amassed 972 points (402G/570A) in 1,540 games with the Winnipeg/Arizona franchise after being chosen seventh overall by the original Jets in the 1995 Entry Draft.
