Wednesday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

In addition to the Florida Panthers signing forward Eetu Luostarinen to a three-year contract extension, here are a smattering of other transactions in the NHL to catch up on.

Unrestricted free agent defenseman Tony DeAngelo returned to the  Carolina Hurricanes, inking a one-year deal worth $1.675 million. DeAngelo had the final year of his contract bought out by the Philadelphia Flyers earlier his month. He played 70 games for the Flyers in 2022-23 and produced 11 goals and 42 points.

Speaking of the Flyers they signed Alexis Gendron to an entry-level contract on Tuesday. Gendron is a right wing who was taken in the seventh round (220th overall) in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He poured in 55 goals in 63 QMJHL games split between Blainville-Boisbriand and Gatineau last season.

The Colorado Avalanche inked forward Nikolai Kovalenko to a two-year, entry-level contract. Nikolai is the son of former Avalanche/Nordiques player Andrei Kovalenko. A sixth round pick (171st overall) in 2018, Kovalenko racked up 54 points (21G/33) in 56 KHL games with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod during the 2022-23 campaign.

Forward Samuel Savoie signed an entry-level contract with the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks. Savoie produced 26 goals and 59 points in 60 games in his third season with the Gatineau Olympics. He was selected by the Blackhawks in the third round (81st overall) of the 2022 draft.

The Blackhawks have lost chairman Rocky Wirtz, who suddenly passed away last night at the age of 70. Under his ownership, the club won three Stanley Cups. Wirtz took over the team when his father Bill Wirtz departed this plane in September, 2007.

Future Hall of Famer Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins annouced his retirement. Bergeron scored 427 goals with 613 assists in 19 seasons with the Bruins, who selected him in the second round of the 2003 draft. The final game of his career was Boston’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Panthers in Game 7 of the first round of the playoffs.
