Thunderbirds drop opener 4-2 in Lehigh Valley

The Springfield Thunderbirds lost the first game in franchise history, falling 4-2 to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night.

Mark Zengerle, Danick Martel and T.J. Brennan beat Mike McKenna in the first period to give the Phantoms a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes.

Anthony Greco notched an unassisted goal at 16:41 to get the T-Birds on the board.

Martel bagged the only goal of the middle stanza to put Lehigh Valley up by three.

Dryden Hunt notched a power-play marker 4:04 into the final frame to complete the scoring. Hunt’s first professional goal was set up by Chase Balisy and Jakub Kindl.

Anthony Stolarz made 31 stops to get the win while McKenna also finished with 31 saves.

The Thunderbirds (0-1) get right back at it with an afternoon road game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
