Monday / Tuesday Recap: Florida Panthers at the IIHF World Championship, Preliminaries Over

Florida Panthers center Nick Bjugstad (pictured) was effective in the USA’s 3-0 victory over Germany on Sunday in Helsinki. Bjugstad, who finished with an even rating, didn’t figure in the scoring but registered four shots on goal and won 5/7 draws while logging 10:08 minutes of ice time skating on the fourth line. Marcel Goc went 9/15 on faceoffs, had two shots on goal and finished with a -1 rating. Goc skated on Germany’s first line and was on the ice for 17:38 minutes. Bobby Butler, Paul Stastny and Stephen Gionta scored the goals for the Americans. Stastny has picked up at a least a point in all six of Team USA’s games. John Gibson made his second start and turned aside 30 shots to post the shutout.

Defenseman Brian Campbell went scoreless, fired three shots on goal and finished with an even rating while logging 20:37 on ice time as Canada edged the Czech Republic 2-1 in Stockholm. Cats forward Tomas Fleischmann had his scoring drought continue as he is now pointless in six games. Fleischmann logged 11 minutes of ice time, had no shots on goal, lost a faceoff and finished with an even rating. Wayne Simmonds and Petr Koukal traded first period goals before Jeff Skinner bagged the game-winner in the third period. Mike Smith made 30 saves to post the win.

Tomas Kopecky picked up no points, had one shot on goal, finished with a +1 rating and won 2/3 draws while logging 15:04 minutes of ice during Slovakia’s 3-1 loss to Russia in Helsinki. Kopecky was on the ice for Branko Radivojevic’s shorthanded goal late in the second period which cut Russia’s lead in half. Alexander Radulov and Ilya Kovalchuk had scored earlier in the second to stake Russia to a 2-0 lead. Denis Denisov put the game away with an even-strength goal 4:48 into the third period. Ilya Bryzgalov made 23 stops to pick up the win.
