When I first began to follow the Panthers I was assured by the faithful and by the club that better days were ahead. After winning the Southeast Division in 2011-12, I was caught up in the “bright future” hysteria. However, two disastrous seasons later it seemed that the promises of a brighter tomorrow would never transform into a successful present. Yet with the change in ownership for the Panthers comes a change on the outlook of the team. Dale Tallon has drafted a lot of players since his arrival in 2010, yet he has not had the financial muscle to ice a competent team and let the prospects gestate in the juniors, college, Europe or the minors. Instead, Tallon has had to make do with AHL veterans, washed up NHLers, and being forced to use the prospects early through a combination of ownership not ponying up the money to carry a full roster or the team training/medical staff being incompetent to the point where the Panthers were often tops in the league in man games lost for several years. Now both those issues have been laid to rest and the youngsters have been doing better in San Antonio and in Sunrise because of it.

Big Nick’s rookie season in 2013-14 saw him lead the Panthers in scoring though that is not saying much given the fact the team could barely score on a soccer net that season. Still, it seems that Bjugstad has built off the positives from last season. I am sure that I am not alone in saying that when he hits the ice I suddenly feel like the Panthers have a chance at scoring. I notice Bjugstad on the ice. Sure, he is six feet, six inches tall, but in the NHL plenty of players go unnoticed for the wrong reasons no matter their size. Bjugstad is starting to be noticed beyond Sunrise. The better the Cats play, the more Bjugstad will be noticed. Or perhaps it may be appropriate to say the better Bjugstad plays, the more the Panthers will be noticed.
