Monday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

Former Florida Panthers Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault set up William Karlsson’s first of the postseason in the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Marc-Andre Fleury made 37 stops for Vegas, who took a commanding three games to none lead with the gritty road win at Staples Center.

Sidney Crosby scored a goal and added three assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins rolled to a 5-1 win over the host Philadelphia Flyers. The Penguins went 3 for 7 on the power play to take a two to one series lead on their cross-state rivals.

The Minnesota Wild climbed back into its series with the Winnipeg Jets thanks to an impressive 6-2 win on home ice. MIkael Granlund, Matt Dumba and Eric Staal each had a goal and assist for the Wild, who now trail the Jets two games to one.

Matt Calvert notched the game-winning goal 12:22 into overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 5-4 decision over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. Cam Atkinson scored twice for the Blue Jackets and Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals. Columbus will return home with a two games to none lead.

The visiting Springfield Thunderbirds fell 4-2 to the Providence Bruins yesterday in the season finale for both teams. The Thunderbirds finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 32-37-5-2 record and in seventh place in the eght-team Atlantic Division. Dryden Hunt (22, 23) scored both of Springfield goals. Curtis Valk, the team’s leading scorer with 62 points, had two assists and Thomas Schemitsch and Mark Fayne also had helpers. Harri Sateri got the start and finished with 31 saves on 34 shots.
