37-year-old defenseman Brooks Orpik signed a $1 million, one-year contract with $500,000 in performance bonuses to return to the Washington Capitals. General manager Brian MacLellan announced the deal Tuesday about a month after trading Orpik  and goaltender Philipp Grubauer to Colorado in a cost-saving move. The Avalanche bought out the remaining year on Orpik’s contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. (Japers’ Rink)

The Anaheim Ducks signed restricted free agent defenseman Brandon Montour to a two-year contract worth $6.775 million. Montour and the Ducks were scheduled for an arbitration hearing before the new deal was consummated. (Los Angeles Times)

Defenseman Joel Edmonson signed a new one-year contract worth $3 million with the St. Louis Blues. The two sides had an arbitration hearing scheduled for July 25. (St. Louis Game Time)

The Calgary Flames signed forward Mark Jankowski to a two-year, $3.35 million contract on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration. Jankowski scored 17 goals and posted 25 points in 72 games last season. (TSN)
