Thursday Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers and NHL Playoffs Open Forum

The Florida Panthers gained a little more representation at the upcoming 2017 IIHF World Championship. Defensemen Jason Demers and Michael Matheson were part of the eighteen players named to Team Canada’s initial roster. Canada will play its first game on May 5, against the Czech Republic.

In addition to Demers and Matheson, Nick Bjugstad (USA) and Denis Malgin (Switzerland) are taking part in the tournament.

In Stanley Cup playoff news, the mighty Anaheim Ducks finished off the Calgary Flames in four straight with a 3-1 victory at Scotiabank Saddledome last night to become the first team to advance. Ottawa blanked Boston 1-0 in Beantown to take a 3-1 series lead over the Bruins. Bobby Ryan scored the only goal and Craig Anderson made 22 stops. The Washington Capitals held off the Toronto Maple Leafs to tie their series at two with a 5-4 win. Devan Dubnyk posted a 28-save shutout as the Minnesota Wild staved off elimination with a 2-0 road win over the St. Louis Blues.
