Tuesday Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers and NHL Playoffs Open Forum

Phil Kessel scored with 6:55 left in regulation and Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 1-0 win over the Ottawa Senators, tying the Eastern Conference final series at one game apiece. Craig Anderson made 28 stops for the Senators.

The Nashville Predators will host the Anaheim Ducks tonight (NBCSN 8 pm) at Bridgestone Arena for Game 3 of the Western Conference final.

In Florida Panthers news, Mike Matheson and Jason Demers were part of Canada’s 5-0 shutout win over Norway on Monday at the IIHF World Championship in Paris. Matheson collected an assist, one shot on goal, and finished with a +1 rating in 15:41 TOI, while Demers logged of 16:55 of ice time and finished with three shots on goal and an even rating. Canada clinched the top spot in Group B and will face either Latvia or Germany in the quarterfinals.

Group play ends today in Paris and Cologne. Canada will take on Finland, Switzerland (Denis Malgin) will face the Czech Republic, and the U.S. (Nick Bjugstad) will do battle with Russia, with the winner taking first place in Group A.

Sam Brittain made 27 saves in the Manchester Monarchs 5-3 Game 3 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays. Thomas Schemitsch finished the game with an even rating. The Monarchs lead the ECHL Eastern Conference final two games to one with the final four games, if necessary, in Manchester.

And finally, Washington Capitals assistant Todd Reirden has joined the contenders for Florida’s head coaching gig.
