Bears edge Thunderbirds 3-2 in overtime

The Springfield Thunderbirds were beaten on home ice by the Hershey Bears, but did manage to pick up a point in the 3-2 overtime loss.

Hershey took a 1-0 first period lead when Paul Carey tallied a power-play goal at the 8:43 mark with the assists going to Chris Bourque and Travis Boyd.

The second period belonged to the Thunderbirds, who scored twice to take a one-goal lead heading to the third period.

Chase Balisy tied the game with his second of the season 8:49 into the frame. Assists on the power-play goal went to Paul Thompson and Brent Regner.

Thompson combined with Dryden Hunt to set up Graham Black’s first of the year thirty seconds later to put Springfield ahead.

The Bears evened the game with 7:19 remaining in regulation when Brad Malone lit the lamp from Colby Williams and Joey Leach with teams at even-strength.

Williams would beat Mike McKenna 1:20 into overtime time to give Hershey the bonus point. Boyd picked up his second point with the primary assist and the secondary went to Madison Bowey.

Goaltender Joe Cannata turned aside 27 shots to post the victory while McKenna finished with 29 saves.

The T-Birds will visit the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this evening before returning home to host the Binghamton Senators on Sunday.
