Panthers’ Dmitry Kulikov Beats Buzzer In Overtime Win For Lokomotiv

Dmitry Kulikov (pictured above in action from last season) scored with five seconds remaining in the first period to erase a two goal deficit and then notched the game-winner with one second left in overtime to give Lokomotiv Yaroslavl a stunning 4-3 victory over Avtomobilist in Wednesday action from the KHL. Kulikov logged 20:20 minutes of ice time, had four shots on goal and picked up his first penalty (boarding) during the road win played in front of a sparse crowd of 3,965 fans in Yekaterinburg. Lokomotiv got into early penalty trouble and Avtomobilist made them pay as Denis Sokolov and Fyodor Malykhin tallied power play goals within a 2:16 minute span early in the opening period. With time running out in the first, Kulikov changed the momentum by converting on the man-advantage with assists going to Yury Petrov and Alexander Guskov. Yegor Yakovlev would tie things up midway through the second period, converting a feed from Columbus Blue Jackets center Artem Anisimov. Former Florida Panthers forward Niklas Hagman would give Lokomotiv its first lead, scoring with thirty-eight seconds left in the period with the assists going to Alexei Kalyuzhny and Emil Galimov. The goal was Hagman’s fifth of the season. In the third period, Stanislav Zhmakin struck for Avtomobilist’s third power play goal of the game with 9:51 left in regulation time to even the game at three. The game went to extra time where Kulikov gave Lokomotiv the win by beating Avtomobilist goaltender Christopher Holt with one tick left on the clock. Niklas Hagman picked up the only assist on the deciding goal. Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves to pick up the win in goal for Lokomotiv. The goals were Kulikov’s second and third of the season.
