Friday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

Florida Panthers Carter Verhaeghe, Grigori Denisenko, Ryan Lomberg and Josh Mahura were joined by a bevy of other NHLers including Kirill Kaprizov, Ivan Barbashev and Andrei Kuzmenko for an informal practice at Panthers IceDen in Coral Springs. Cool stuff for those lucky enough to see it!

Prospect Elliot Ekmark centered the first line as Almtuna IS posted a 3-2 penalty shot win over AIK IF in preseason action from Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan.

Kirill Gerasimyuk served as the backup goaltender in SKA Neva St. Petersburg’s 3-2 penalty shot win over Gornyak-UGMK in an exhibition game from Russia’s VHL.

Jakub Kos skated on the fourth line in Ilves 3-1 loss to KalPa in a preseason game from Finland’s Liiga. He did not figure in the scoring.

Kasper Puutio played on the third pairing in Pelicans 4-3 win over Tappara. He did not figure in the scoring of Liiga friendly.

The Edmonton Oilers announced on Thursday that the club an defenseman Evan Bouchard agreed to a two-year deal worth $3.9 million annually. Bouchard, 23, produced 8 goals and 40 points in 82 regular season and racked up 17 points (4G/13A) in 12 postseason games.

Woman’s World Championship Division 1A

The women get a much-needed day off today in Shenzen, China. The hosts earned promotion to the Top Division in 2024 with their 2-0 win over Austria yesterday.

Let’s look at what’s at stake in the final round of games which will be played tomorrow morning.

Slovakia (0-4) vs. Austria (2-2)

  • Slovakia will be relegated to Division 1B in 2024. Austria’s loss to the Netherlands earlier in the tournament means they can’t finish in the top two and will remain in Division 1A next year.

Denmark (2-2) vs. Norway (1-3)

  • The Danes still have a chance at promotion. They will need to win this game in regulation and hope that the Netherlands loses to China in regulation. Norway has a chance to play spoiler, but that’s it. They will remain in Division 1A in 2024.

China (4-0) vs. Netherlands (3-1)

  • China has already earned promotion and can win the tournament by picking up a point in this game. The Netherlands also need just a single point to ensure promotion. They can also move up the ladder with a loss of any kind by Denmark. The Dutch team will win the tournament if they beat China in regulation.
