The Springfield Thunderbirds (6-0-0-2) won both of its games this weekend to remain unbeaten in regulation and in second place in the Atlantic Division, with a game in hand on the Charlotte Checkers.
Harry Zolnierczyk scored two goals and added an assist to power Springfield to a 4-2 win over the visiting Providence Bruins on Saturday night. Joel Lowry opened the scoring and set up Paul Thompson’s empty-netter clincher. Samuel Montembeault stopped 26 shots and defenseman Riley Stillman had two helpers.
On Sunday afternoon, the host T-Birds blew out the Hartford Wolfpack by a 6-2 count. Jayce Hawryluk exploded for five points with a goal and four assists. Rookie sensation Henrik Borgstrom contributed two goals, two assists and seven shots on goal. Borgstrom is tied for the AHL rookie lead in scoring with Belleville’s Drake Batherson with 11 points, despitee playing two less games. Dryden Hunt also scored twice and goalie Chris Driedger stopped 28 of 30 shots.
