Olympic Recap: Canada Stays Golden

Carey Price posted his second straight shutout and Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby, and Chris Kunitz all bagged their first goals in Sochi to lead Canada to a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden in today’s gold-medal game.

Canada won all six of its matches and never trailed in the tournament.

Toews opened the scoring by deflecting in a sweet pass from Jeff Carter at the 12:55 mark of the first period. Shea Weber drew the secondary helper on the goal.

Canada’s captain Crosby collected a Swedish turnover and beat Henrik Lundqvist with a breakaway backhander with 4:17 remaining in the middle frame.

Kunitz scored unassisted midway through the third period, after Crosby forced another turnover, to put the final nail in Sweden’s coffin.

Canada took the Sochi Games on the strength of a suffocating defensive effort that saw them surrender only three goals the enitre tournament.

Carey Price started five games, gave up three goals, and finished with two shutouts. Backup Roberto Luongo posted a 6-0 shutout of Austria in his only appearance.

After the loss, Sweden picked up a well-earned Silver Medal, while Finland collected the Bronze yesterday with a 5-0 rout of a dejected Team USA.

And that’s all from Sochi, folks.
