Memorial Cup: Kelowna Rockets blast Clapperton, Oceanic 7-3

Edmonton Oilers prospect Leon Draisaitl scored two goals and added an assist to power the Kelowna Rockets to 7-3 win over the Rimouksi Oceanic at the 2015 Memorial Cup yesterday.

Kelowna evened their round robin record at 1-1 while Rimouski fell to 0-2. The Oceanic must beat the Quebec Remparts on Wednesday or they will be eliminated from the tournament.

Gage Quinney and Nick Merkley also scored two goals each for the Rockets. Madison Bowey added the other Kelowna goal to go along with two assists.

Florida Panthers prospect Chris Clapperton got Rimouski, who were already trailing 3-0, on the board with a goal at the 15:14 mark of the first period. Clapperton finished the game with 4 shots on goal, one hit and a -1 rating.

Michael Joly and Frederik Gauthier scored the other goals for the Oceanic, with each player also adding an assist. Alexis Loiseau finished the tilt with two helpers.

Jackson Whistle made 28 saves to post the win while Rimouski’s Louis-Philip Guindon stopped 17 of 22 shots before giving way to Philippe Desrosiers. Desrosiers finished with 12 saves in relief.

The Rockets will face Josh Brown and the Oshawa Generals at 7:30 pm tonight. The 2-0 Generals have already clinched a spot in the semifinals. Another win will move them directly to the championship game.
